PETRA JAYA, KUCHING

Siblings Hyde Nachman Hijium and Hyde Nathania Hijium did Brunei proud after securing the bronze medal in the poomsae male individual and poomsae female individual events, respectively at the 18th Sukma (Malaysia Games) at the Stadium Perpaduan in Petra Jaya, Kuching yesterday.

Brunei Darussalam's athlete Hyde Nachman beat Mic Daniel Siaw of Sabah to be in contention for gold in the male individual while compatriot Hyde Nathania beat Maitheli A/P Mohana Sundaram of Pulau Pinang to stay in the hunt for gold in the female individual.

Brunei recorded 7.04 points in the male final to share bronze with Negeri Sembilan who scored 6.92 points behind silver medallist Selangor with 7.12 points and hosts Sarawak who captured gold with 7.72 points.

Meanwhile, Brunei collected 7.11 points in the female final to share bronze with Selangor who scored 7.05 points behind silver medallists Johor with 7.17 points and eventual winners Sarawak with 7.38 points.

The bronze accomplishments from the two exponents will be considered as an instant impact for the Brunei Darussalam contingent after eclipsing their medal haul compared to the previous edition though their sole gold medal in 2014 was still considerably better.

However, the invited nation who has been an active member in the multi-sporting competition contested by the Malaysian states since their first participation in 1996 is off to a roaring start finishing in the podium in two of the first four events they have taken part.

The duo of Hyde Nachman and Hyde Nathania has accumulated 6.96 points in the mixed pair with Negeri Sembilan but was beaten on points in the taegeuk 8.

Meanwhile, in the under 55kg male kumite,Mohammad Dailami bin Hap Daud was defeated by Reginald Alex Alexander of Sabah in the preliminary round at the Stadium Bandaraya in Miri.

Sarawak made an excellent start in taekwondo winning three gold medals on offer after pair Augustine Rudy Grocer and Nurul Hidayah Abdul Karim clinched the first gold medal with a score. of 7.37 points.

Yong Jin Kun added Sarawak's gold haul in the poomsae male individual while Marylyne Bungan Lian triumphed in the poomsae feinale individual.
