BERAKAS, BRUNEI-MUARA
Menglait FC are in firm contention to join Brunei DST Premier League leaders Al Idrus Junior in the Brunei DST Super League and are four wins away to guarantee a berth in Brunei's top flight.
Nurhidayat Abas starred in the 3-2 win against IKLS with a brace with Azim Hamidoon's effort sandwiched in between.
Currently in second place, Menglait FC sole defeat this season came in the 3-2 loss against newly promoted Al Idrus Junior who have made shockwaves so far this season.
Menglait trail the league leaders by three points after recording their fourth win of the season.
Al Idrus Junior have been in irresistible form in the league and remain unbeaten with five straight wins including victories over Setia Perdana and Tabuan Under-17.
The newly promoted side have passed their biggest test after comfortably dispatching Tabuan Under-17 in a 4-0 rout whose objective in the league was to prepare players in representing the national team in the regional or international arena.
Al Idrus Junior have been wary of the threat of Tabuan Under-17 prior to the clash but has since reinforced their strengths in the local football scene.
Earlier this season, Setia Perdana and Panchor Murai FC have been casted as potential promotion favourites but inconsistent form in the league have thwarted their increasingly faltering hopes with the latter seemingly suffering from second season syndrome.
Despite the availability of last season's top scorer Haji Rahimni Haji Pundut and the fast improving Faisal bin Ali in their ranks, Setia Perdana have not won since the opening day of the season against Panchor Murai.
Following relegation to Brunei's second tier, IKLS FC and Kilanas FC have found it tough to bounce back and are both hovering in mid-table quite distant from the promotion places.
Al Idrus Junior have repeated the same devastating form as past promoted sides Lun Bawang in 2014 and Kota Ranger in 2015 and if history repeats itself they could well be playing Brunei DST Super League football in the 2017 season.
Menglait could take a step closer towards promotion to Brunei's top flight if they successfully negotiate against Kilanas FC at the Berakas Sports Complex on Friday.
