Over 3,400 households in the districts of Songkhone and Champhon in Savannakhet are expected to benefit from the Integrated Irrigated Agriculture and Rural Development Project designed to ensure the provision of irrigated water for farming purposes in the localities.

The project, among other activities funded with a loan of US$46 million from the Republic of Korea, aims to ensure agricultural production by local people thus improving livelihoods and socio-economic development in the rural areas of Champhone and Songkhone districts.

The Department of Irrigation, Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry, last Friday signed an agreement to hire the Joint Venture Dasan Consultants and Yooshin Engineering Corporation of S. Korea to design and supervise the construction of irrigation facilities and provide training on water use management in the central province.

The signing ceremony was held in Vientiane Capital by Director General of the Irrigation Department, Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry, Mr Maykong Phonphommavong, and President of Dasan Consultants, Mr Jae Won Yu, on behalf of the joint venture company.

The project, worth US$8.842 million, also aims to minimize the impact of possible natural disasters such as flooding and drought, and develop basic infrastructure in rural areas.

An initial study suggests that the project will be able to provide water for farming purposes all year round on more than 4,100 ha in six villages in the two districts including the four villages of Phonmouang, Sakhuen, Phonthong-Doneyeng, and Dongmouang in Champhone district, and two villages, Lahanam and Lahakhok, in Sonkhone district.
