KUCHING, SARAWAK

Brunei's bowler Abu Khaledi Yussrri Abu Bakar qualified for the last 16 of the Men's Masters in the 18th Sukma (Malaysia Games) eventually finishing in 12th place overall at the Megalane Bowling Centre, Batu Kawah in Kuching yesterday.

The nation's lone bowling hope has scraped it to the top 16 by one pinfall with a total of 5714 to Johor's Muhammad Syafiq bin Kamal Shahren's total of 5713 enough to pip him into the final spot. Only the top 16 bowlers made the cut to the final day which had lasted six gruelling days.

Sarawak's Ervin Lim Wai Mun bagged gold in the men's event after ousting Federal Territories's Cheah Yung Ren who claimed silver with a total of 252 pinfalls to the latter's 164.

The Sukma hosts claimed a Masters' double gold after Nerosha Keligit emerged victorious in the ladies' event with 206 pinfalls at the expense of her fellow state team-mate Gillian Lim Slew G who managed 183 pinfalls.

Sarawak's Md Syafiq Sajeli claimed bronze after Federal Territories's Cheah Yung Ren outgunned him 224 pinfalls to 216 pinfalls in a stepladder format.

In the ladies' event, Lim Siew's advancement to the final after beating bronze medallist Syarifah Nadia binti Ali Hassan by 186 pinfalls to 159 meant Sarawak was guaranteed gold.

The quick-fire double gold also assisted Sarawak to close the gap with Selangor in. the medal board who led by 58 golds to 57.

The remaining Brunei bowlers had failed to secure a spot in the Masters' event with Muhammad Al-Amin bin Haji Abdul Hamid languishing in 54th place, Awangku Mohd Ardhi Pengiran Omar Ali in 67th place and Safwan Anwar Sapri in 81st place.

Meanwhile, Brunei's cycling athletes finished between 23rd to 26th positions in the Cross Country Olympic at the Bukit Siol Track.

In descending order, the quartet of Abdul Mu'iz Yuzaini, Md Feasal Firdaus Md Nurfadillah, Muhammad Al-Wale bin Haji Aini and Muhammad Hamizan bin Haji Herman all finished behind the race leader by four laps.

Terengganu led a one-two podium finish with Abdul Arif bin Abdul Rahman bagging gold and Muhammad Suhaimi bin Ghani taking silver while Sabah's Mohd Faizikry bin Jumah settled for bronze.

However, Selangor responded to Sarawak's late double-gold surge by winning gold in the men's tennis doubles.
