KAMPONG TUNGKU-KATOK

The pineapple farm ventured by the Kampung Tungku and Katok Consultative Council at the Agricultural Development area, KKP Tungku has the potential in producing quality pineapple products to be marketed nationwide and also for the country's self-sufficiency. It is also expected to be able to compete with pineapples from other countries.

Kampung Tungku and Katok famed for their 'paun' type of pineapple products are now revived by the kampung residents in encouraging youths at the respective village to be involved in realizing the ideas and the nation's aspiration. Apart from that it also hoped to provide job opportunities, platform and as a source of income to those interested.

Ventured on a 15 hectare land, the MPK Tungku Katok pineapple farm has been subdivided into 71 farm plots where each plot has a minimum wide of zero point 5 hectare. 78 individuals comprising village residents, retirees and youths worked at the farm. According to Awang Haji Ismail bin Haji Rajab, Kampung Tungku and Katok village chief, the villagers and his relentless efforts applying for pineapple farming sites from the government at the former Mc Farm area has finally become a reality. He added this is also in line with His Majesty's titah in developing and increasing the country's economy.

Traditional methods are used to cultivate the pineapples. In addition to the pound pineapple, the farm also grows sweet pineapple, banana pineapple and Moris pineapple type. The pineapples are expected to be harvested by the end of December this year. According to Awang Haji Matali Bin Apong, the farm manager, pineapples are not seasonal and could grow all year. However it is time consuming and could only produce after a year and a half. The pineapple seeds are imported mainly from Taiwan, while some are from Sabah and Sarawak.

Apart from providing agricultural sites, and the Pilot Project Program, the Ministry of Primary Resources and Tourism through the Department of Agriculture and Agrifood also provided sites, technical advice services, assisting with market access and obtaining seed or foreign pineapple seed. The Brunei Muara District Office also donated fences for the entire farm.
