A strong consumer regime is essential in developing sustainable consumption in the Brunei's domestic market, which is a crucial building block in achieving a dynamic and sustainable economy, as aspired in the economic goal of Wawasan Brunei 2035. The Permanent Secretary for Economy at the Ministry of Finance and Economy stressed the matter during the Opening of a Training Course on Consumer Protection Law. Doctor Dayang Hajah May Fa'ezah binti Haji Ahmad Ariffin also highlighted the importance of having in place an effective fair-trading legislation to promote consumers' confidence and more equitable marketplace.

To strengthen the consumer regime and stay relevant, Doctor Dayang Hajah May Fa'ezah noted that the Department of Competition and Consumer Affairs, the Department of Economic Planning and Development, Ministry of Finance and Economy has been working closely with the Attorney General's Chamber in modernising the consumer protection legal framework to the current socio-economic context. The training is timely to provide the necessary capacity in preparation for the finalised law.

The two-day training was organised by the Consumer Protection Division, the Competition and Consumer Commission of Singapore (CCCS). The training covers consumer protection policy framework in Singapore and Singapore's experience in advocating and enforcing the law. Attending the training were representatives from the Ministry of Health; the Ministry of Energy, Manpower and Industry; the Ministry of Transportation and Info-Communications; the Ministry of Religious Affairs; the Attorney General's Chambers; the Small Claims Tribunal; the Authority of Info-communication and Technology Industry (AITI); and the Brunei Darussalam Arbitration Centre.
