A young dog escaped from a train and walked 125 miles through the Siberian forest in an attempt to return home after her owner rejected her.

Six months after getting her, the woman who owned Manora, nicknamed Maru, claimed she was allergic and no longer wanted the bullmastiff.

She tried to send Maru back to the kennel where she was born, but the one-year-old dog is said to have used her paws to ‘open a compartment door’ on the train before she fled at a remote station near Achinks.

Staff on the train, which was heading from Krasnoyarsk to Novosibirsk, shouted desperately after her from the platform, but Maru was long gone.

Alla, the owner of the kennel in Novosibirsk, organised a search party and pleaded for information on social media.

Two-and-a-half days later, the wounded and tired dog was found at an industrial estate, close to where her owner lives.

She had followed the longest railway tracks in the world for 125 miles (200km).

Alla said Maru was lucky she wasn’t ‘eaten by a bear of chewed up by wolves’.

She is convinced Maru would have made it the whole way back to her owner if it wasn’t for her injuries.

‘I’m sure she was looking for her house. She did not run to Novosibirsk, she wanted to go back to where she lived,’ she told the Siberian Times.

She said Maru was exhausted, had broken paws and damaged pads on her feet when she was found – and claimed that the dog appeared to be ‘in tears’ when she was discovered.

Alla told the Siberian Times Maru had ‘jumped out of the compartment door, kicked the handle to open it and almost threw the conductor out of the way’ before she ‘jumped out like a bullet’.

Alla added: ‘When the door opened to the platform, she jumped out into the night.’

Maru is being treated for her injuries and has now been reunited with her mum and dad at the kennel.
