BRUNEI DARUSSALAM

Islam is a religion of peace and detests hostility. The tranquility and stability of life for all citizens are aspirations for any nation, be it big or small, Muslims or non-Muslims - all have hopes for peace and harmony, Imams said yesterday in the Friday sermon.

According to Islam, armed forces are not for invasion and oppression. Instead, they are for self and national defence against any threats, treachery and invasion.

In this regard, misconception often occurs up to the point of making sinister claims and accusations stating that Islam is propagated through violence, cruelty and that Islam itself promotes wars. In other words, "Islam is spread through wars," Imams noted.

To rectify such common misconception, one needs to be fully aware of the core principle of `war' in the perspective of Islam. As a fact, Islam will not attack anyone unless being attacked (an act of Jihad or counterattack), they added.

"The actual principle in Islam regarding 'war' is that war must not happen without being supported by any specific reasons.

"Islam prohibits the objective of performing war to extend power, influence or colonial invasion. This also includes the act of vengeance which leads to enmity, demolition and destruction.

"Islam approves 'Jihad' (act of counterattack) if the Muslims are being attacked and treated cruelly, asked to leave their homelands and villages by k wee, forced to abandon their faith of believing in Allah I he Almighty, or if their properties are unlawfully confiscated and if a holy place such as mosques are invaded.

"Islam has also set clear limits which must be obeyed and followed in the times of war. if the enemy agrees I  In call a ceasefire then it is obligatory for the Muslims to stop fighting.

"This is because the Muslims are instructed not to practise hostility and violation against other people's rights since war is certainly not 'the way of life' for the Muslims. In fact, war is the last resort to he taken when no other solution is available," Imams said.
