BRUNEI DARUSSALAM

Religious authorities were yesterday disappointed to note that there are some Muslims in today's world who have neglected learning the Al-Quran and using it as a guide to steer them through life. Nor do they use it as a cure in treating the emotional and psychological illnesses that they suffer from.

In the Friday sermon, Imams said, for example, there are those who try to settle their problems through immoral means such as drinking alcohol and using drugs. In fact there are also some who take out their problems on others such as abusing the wife or children.

They do these things thinking that it is only through these means that t heir problems can be settled but the truth is such behaviour will only complicate things and add to their emotional stress.

Imams added, "Actually, in order to obtain peace, wellbeing, harmony and peace of mind, Islam has provided very effective guidelines on the treatment of psychological illnesses and emotional stress, some of these are to do dzikrullah (remembrance of Allah) in abundance, carrying out all of the commandments of Allah the Almighty which is performing what has been enjoined and avoiding all His prohibitions, and purifying the soul by avoiding all sins and wrongdoings.

A strong faith acts as a shield as we face the various challenges on earth. It is only by returning to the teachings of the religion and by practising them that man's soul is saved from unrest and agitation.

Imams urged Ummah not to become too busy chasing worldly happiness, luxuries and grandeur as it causes us to neglect and forget our religion. Know that Allah the Almighty has promised that only those who are sincere in carrying out the teachings of Islam will have a serene heart that is peaceful and secure, they reminded.
