World Health Day Celebration

 April 8th, 2018  |  08:25 AM  |   673 views

BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN

The burden on non-communicable diseases in the country needs to be addressed in a more effective and consolidated way. According to the Minister of Health, the number of patient visits to the Chronic Diseases Clinic involving cases of Diabetes, hypertension or high blood pressure and high cholesterol have increased from more than 69 thousand in 2015 to almost 77 thousand in 2017.   However, Yang Berhormat Dato Paduka Dr. Haji Mohammad Isham bin Haji Jaafar said the overall total of patients visiting the Basic Health Care Service in the last 3 years has decreased between 350 thousand to 40 thousand patients a year. Among other things, the decrease is due to the introduction of the Self-certified Sick Leave in 2016 and the Appointment System at Health Centres.  Yang Berhormat made the statement during the World Health Day 2018 celebration yesterday morning.

Touching on the number of patients coming to the Emergency Department of Raja Isteri Pengiran Anak Saleha Hospital, the Minister said in the last 3 years, between 71 to 78 percent of the cases involved minor illness. Dr.Shin Yong Soo, the World health Organisation Regional Director for the West Pacific through a special video clip shared the status and challenges of universal health coverage.

The celebration also featured a Health Sketch produced for the first time by local Medical officers depicting the implementation of the Universal Health Coverage in the country influencing life positively.

World Health Day is celebrated annually on the 7th of April. It is a platform for disseminating information of the importance of healthcare. The theme this year is "Universal Health Coverage-For All" which covers the various aspects of health services. These include providing accessible service, besides health services which do not burden the individual, regardless of sosio-economic status. His Majesty's Government places top priority to the health care of the country's citizens and residents by providing health and medical services through 4 hospitals in the four districts, 14 health centres, 3 health clinics, 17 Mother and Child Clinics, 3 Mobile Medical Clinics and 2 Flying Medical Service Clinics.
