BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN

Islam teaches its followers that every act or deed needs to be accompanied with a niat or intention. Intentions are the ones that differentiate an individual's act from either being a normal act or an act of devotion. Acts such as showering, eating, drinking, sleeping and others, which are not accompanied with an intention for Allah Subhanahu Wataala will not be rewarded, while acts that are done for the sake of Allah Subhanahu Wataala will be considered acts of devotion. This was among the matters touched in today's Khutbah Jumaat or Friday Sermon. The sermon, entitled 'Sincere intention and attitude', also explained that if a Muslim has a good intention to carry out something, but has not had the opportunity to carry them out due to barriers and obstacles such as being busy, poverty and ill health, then the good intention will still receive rewards from Allah Subhanahu Wataala.

In the sermon, the Imam or prayer leader said that sincere intentions must be present in all Muslims. The prayer leader added that a sincere person does not expect rewards or anything in return for their good action as they solely want to obtain Allah's pleasure. A person's sincerity can be seen from his or her attitude and actions, such as not feeling forced in doing acts of devotion or a particular work and carrying them out wholeheartedly. This, the prayer leader highlighted, is different to those who perform acts of devotion or carry out work for other purposes. These types of people only work or be charitable to show-off so as to seen as generous and hardworking as they expect compliments, recognition or rewards, which in turn will create undesirable traits such as riak, ujub, takabbur and others. For these people, all their good deeds will be erased. The prayer leader also stressed that Allah Subhanahu Wataala will only receive a sincere person's good deeds which are carried out solely for Him.
