SANDAKAN

A bomb squad from Sabah Police Contingent detonated the 550-pound World War Two bomb yesterday.

The bomb was discovered by a construction worker while carrying out excavation work near the Road Transport Department building here.

Sandakan police chief ACP Mohd Azhar bin Hamin, said four members of the bomb squad detonated the bomb  around 3pm.

“After dismantling the bomb and removing the fuse, the bomb squad carried out the detonation process smoothly. There was no reported injury,” he said.

Mohd Azhar advised the public to immediately report to police should they see any bomb lying around and to avoid attempting to dismantle or touch it.

It is not impossible that bombs may be found in Sandakan as the district was attacked during World War Two, he added.
