The practice of visiting one another and holding an open house function has many advantages that are profoundly meaningful for the Muslim ummah, especially in bringing closer the bond of brotherhood among Muslims. Islam has outlined some rules and etiquette when visiting during Syawal, among them, giving salam or greeting and seeking permission before entering the house visited. The matters were emphasised during the Friday Sermon titled The Practice of Visiting One Another.
Hari Raya celebrations are held in various forms such as holding open house functions. This practise is a charitable act as it can foster closer relations and gather relatives near and far. However, holding an open house function should not be an obligation that can end up being a burden. It should be held according to the respective capabilities, and more importantly, abide by the teachings of Islam and there should be no mixing of right and wrong.
