Annual Assembly Of Syariah Courts

BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN

The increasing number of khalwat or close proximity cases in the country is becoming a concern. According to the Chief Syar'ie Judge, although the punishment imposed on offenders convicted of the offence of khalwat is not as severe as that for other offences, the offence should be taken seriously by every community, especially Muslims. Speaking at the Annual Assembly of Syariah Courts for 1445/2024, Yang Berhormat Pehin Orang Kaya Paduka Seri Utama Dato Paduka Seri Setia Haji Awang Salim bin Haji Besar said, if the offence continues, it will lead to greater offences and vices and the punishment imposed will of course be heavier and likely to lead to mandatory whipping, according to hadd law.

Yang Berhormat said the relevant and responsible agencies must play their respective roles and take the matter seriously as well as take the initiative about the matter, especially towards the issue and problem of free interactions or promiscuity among youths today. If it is not overcome, there is a fear of increasing khalwat cases, attempts for zina or adultery and such in Brunei Darussalam which will bring about bad and negative effects in the life of society and country.

The ceremony coincided with presentation of Appreciation Certificates for participation in Sports Events and to the Transferred and Retired Syariah Court Officers and Staff. Organised by the Syariah Courts, State Judiciary Department, Prime Minister's Office, the ceremony was held at the Multipurpose Hall of the High Court and Syariah Courts Building.
