Myanmar Securities Exchange Center Deputy Director Makota Sukoma died in a paragliding accident in India last week.
Makota Sukoma, 38, served as the director of the Japanese Daiwa Securities Group, a partner of the Myanmar Securities Exchange Center (MSEC). Indian media reported that he died in a paragliding accident in India’s Himachal Pradesh, popular with both domestic and foreign tourists for its Himalayan peaks, according to police.
U Thet Htun Oo, a senior manager at the Yangon Stock Exchange, told the Irrawaddy that this was a big loss in the development of the country’s stock exchange market.
“He worked for Daiwa and MSEC to develop Burma’s stock exchange market for more than five years. He was generous in sharing his experience with us,” U Thet Htun Oo said. U Thet Htun Oo worked for MSEC with him as a senior manager for more than 10 years before joining the Yangon Stock Exchange.
According to India’s NDTV, officials reported that Makota Sukoma died after crashing into a hillside while paragliding in Bir Billing, 131 miles (212 kilometers) from state capital Shimla.
“Sukoma took off in Billing on Friday afternoon but lost control of the glider and crashed into a hillside,” Sunaina Sharma, local sub-divisional magistrate, told journalists, the report said.
According to reports, Sukoma was found seriously injured and rushed to the closest hospital where he was declared dead on arrival due to sustained head injuries.
“He [Sukoma] used to go paragliding at least twice a year since I started working with him at MSEC. He enjoyed paragliding in India and I was shocked after hearing this bad news,” U Thet Htun Oo said, adding, “He trained many of the locals here and he will be missed.”
Daiwa Securities Group has worked as a joint partner of the Myanmar Economic Bank to develop the MSEC in Burma since 1996.
