GEORGE TOWN

Parts of Penang island were hit by flash floods, with trees uprooted after rain inundated several areas in George Town and its outskirts on Saturday (July 1) morning.

The four-hour intermittent downpour brought flash floods to low-lying areas of Jalan P. Ramlee, Kampung Makam, Jalan Datuk Keramat and several roads in the heart of town.

According to the Penang Island City Councl (MBPP) Facebook page, several trees were uprooted at Jalan Loh Poh Heng in Tanjung Bungah, Taman Bukit Saujana at Paya Terubong.

"However, the MBPP emergency squad and enforcement department personnel were quick to respond and cleared the roads for traffic to flow smoothly," said the council.

MetMalaysia said there were signs that the intensity of the rain was at least 20mm an hour and the downpour will continue for more than an hour in several states.
