We all know to wash fresh veg before we start to use it, but one woman has started a huge debate online by asking if people wash salad before use when it's pre-packed

A huge debate has been sparked online over whether to wash pre-made salads before eating them, as one woman was left baffled after realising many other folk rinse their leaves before tucking in.

It's common knowledge that vegetables should be washed before use, and we've all seen the horror stories of people finding unwelcome critters in their bag of lettuce. The confusion lies in supermarket 'ready-to-eat' bags that state consumers don't need to wash before using.

The debate started in an online forum after someone asked if they needed to wash their pre-made salad - and while many think it is ok not to, some were adamant you should always give it a wash.

In the Reddit post, the author posted a picture of one of an M&S pre-made salad and asked: "Do you re-wash washed & ready to eat salad?"

This led to a furore of comments as many onlookers were adamant they were in the right over the question.

One person suggested this would not be needed as it had already been packed by the supermarket, they quipped: "Of all the brands M&S are one of the few that I would trust not to be punting salmonella filled leaves."

Another joked: "I do not, but I also run with scissors and play with matches."

A third admitted: "I don't wash any veg to be honest, pre-washed or not."

But not everyone was in agreement, as someone else commented: "Yes, I have found snails in washed salad before now."

Others had similarly outrageous experiences, as one mentioned: "Yes because I bought a prewashed salad, put it on my plate and was about to sit down to eat, then I saw it! A great big maggot, so yes I rewash a prewashed salad."

And another added: "Yes I've found bugs in veggies before, can't remember if it was pre washed or not but either way I'd rather not be surprised again."
