KUALA LUMPUR

Two people were killed and five others injured in an accident at the Ipoh-Kuala Lumpur Federal Road near Slim River.

Perak traffic chief Supt Wan Jamil Wan Chik said the driver of a Perodua Axia, known only as Muhammad Hafizi, and his passenger Muhammad Syafie Abdul Latif, died at the scene of the 6.40am incident yesterday.

Supt Wan Jamil said the accident involved three cars.

The Perodua Axia and a Toyota Innova crashed into each other while a third car, a Nissan Sylphy, rammed into a tree by the roadside.

“The Nissan Sylphy and the Toyota Innova were travelling from Tanjung Malim towards Slim River, while Muhammad Hafizi was driving in the opposite direction.

“We believe Muhammad Hafizi lost control of his vehicle and swerved into the opposite lane prior to the accident,” Supt Wan Jamil said.

The driver of the Nissan Sylphy, Lim Tho, 74, from Taman Bukit Maluri, Kepong, saw the oncoming car and swerved off the road and crashed into the tree, Supt Wan Jamil added.

“Following closely behind the Nissan, the Toyota Innova driven by 55-year-old Salmah Sabil, was unable to stop in time and crashed into the right side of the Perodua Axia,” he said.

Supt Wan Jamil said the Perodua Axia then overturned, killing Muhammad Hafizi and Muhammad Syafie, who was from Kampung Lebu Lurah Bilut in Bentong, Pahang.

“Salmah was seriously injured. Lim suffered injuries to his head while his passenger Lim Guat Khim, 32, was unharmed.

“Two others in Muhammad Hafizi’s car, Nursyaqinah Abd Latiff, 15, and Norhamizah Hakim, 24, from Taman Perkampungan Pelindung Beserah, Pahang, were also injured,” he added.

Supt Wan Jamil said the injured were taken to Slim River Hospital for medical attention.

The accident, he said, would be investigated under Section 41 (1) of the Road Transport Act for causing death by reckless driving.
