Joint Operation under Electricity Act

Several premises were found to make unauthorized electrical connections that used excessive and unlimited electricity. The findings were the result of the joint operation of the Department of Electrical Services, DES and the Royal Brunei Police Force, the Fire and Rescue Department as well as the Brunei Darussalam Electricity Authority conducted at 3 separate locations namely Kampong Malabau, Kampong Serusop Commercial complexes and the Industrial Complex in Kampong Lugu.
Unauthorized electrical connections can result in unsafe wiring that can result in fire, loss of life and property damage. The DES and other law enforcement agencies will continuously conduct random inspection at commercial premises suspected of making unauthorized connections and diversion of electrical wiring from meters or meter tampering in the conduct of any activity that requires intensive use of electricity in particular cryptocurrency mining activity. Installing unauthorized connections is an offence under the Electricity Act, Chapter 71 Section 3 and 9 and if convicted will be fined not more than $50,000 and imprisonment not more than 3 years or both.
