Sarawak is fortunate to have leaders who are tolerant towards religious freedom, says Minister of Local Government and Housing Dato Sri Dr Sim Kui Hian.

He said religions should be used to promote peace and harmony and not to create hatred as what was happening in Peninsular Malaysia.

“We do not want that to happen here. Sarawakians must protect Sarawak to prevent it from becoming what is happening in Peninsular Malaysia,” he said when presenting funds to Unit for Other Religions (Unifor) at Sibu Municipal Council (SMC) headquarters here yesterday afternoon.

Ten houses of worship received the fund for reconstruction and renovation works.

Sibu Buddhist Lodge, Sibu Buddhist Association, Pusat Sakya Samdrub-Ling Sibu, Namo Buddha Buddhist Society, Persatuan Pengarut Agama Buddha Shakyamurni and Eng Ann Teng Tua Peh Kong Temple Sibu received RM15,000 each.

Four others (for building extension) are Sibu Nan Hai Buddhist Association which received RM500,000, Zion Methodist Church (RM100,000), En Tao Methodist Church (RM50,000) and BahaI’s Charitable Trust (RM150,000) for the construction of a learning centre.

Dr Sim said Unifor was started in 2016 by the late Pehin Sri Adenan Satem as his election manifesto, and is continued by Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg.
