45 Year Old to Appeal Against Assault Sentence

A local man was sentenced to 24 months' jail with two strokes after he was found guilty of assaulting a police officer. However, a stay of execution was put in place by the court following the defence application.
Haji Abu Bakar bin Haji Mohd Arshad assaulted Police Constable Pek Seng Huat, deterring the public servant in discharging his duties, in an anti-vice raid on a make-shift gambling den in the Tutong district on October 26, 2013.
Magistrate Hajah Ervy Sufitriana binti Haji Abdul Rahman found DPP Hajah Suhana binti Haji Sudin's case to have proven beyond the court's reasonable doubt on the charge against the defendant.
Defence counsel Sheikh Noordin bin Sheikh Mohammad's application for the execution of sentence to be stayed was granted by the Magistrate after indicating that the defence will be appealing in the higher court against the Magistrate's decision.
DPP Rozaimah binti Abdul Rahman represented the Public Prosecutor in the case yesterday.
