Yesterday's Friday sermon urged prospective pilgrims to stay fit and healthy, while performing the Haj, since performing all the obligatory rites would require considerable energy and stamina.
"The Haj pilgrimage is the fifth pillar of Islam obligatory upon every Muslim who has the financial means, and who has met all the requisite conditions," said Imams during the sermon. "Prospective pilgrims need to be fully prepared in terms of knowledge, health and finances, which are adequate expenditure for themselves and for the dependents that they leave behind.
"Prospective Haj pilgrims in this country have already joined pilgrimage classes and studied all that is obligatory and sunnah (voluntary duties) for performing the Haj. It is hoped that through these classes, pilgrims will be able to carry out their duties well and not simply imitate what others are doing, without any guidance."
The sermon also described the slaughtering of a sacrificial animal during the Haj season as a sunnah, which is strongly enjoined in Islam, as a way of expressing thankfulness towards Allah the Almighty.
"Performing the sacrifice teaches us to be generous and charitable, because most of the meat will be given as charity to the poor and the needy," said Imams. "It is gratifying to know that there are some among us who save little by little, in order to perform the ritual slaughter."
