CHUNG Hwa Middle School (CHMS), Bandar Seri Begawan yesterday hosted a colourful Earth Day celebration carrying the theme 'Earth- Focus for the Future!'
Kho Guik Lan, Principal of the school in her welcoming remark highlighted the growing concerns of environmental issues as well as climate change.
"Every year, there, are plenty of issues that demand our attention, yet environmental issues remain our priority. Climate change will test our determination as human beings," she said.
"Global warming is not some distant threat, it is real today. If we don't redouble our efforts to address it now, all our other work to this point will be in vain."
The principal explained that there are also environmental trends that threaten to radically alter the planet and the lives of many species.
"We could prevent six million hectares of productlve dryland turns into worthless desert every year."
"CHMS, BSB has reinforced its eco-friendly practices through acts like Cleaning Campaigns, Participating in Earth Hour, Beach Bunch, Tree planting and many more.
"We all gather here every year to mark the Earth day celebration," she said.
Lim Ting Chai, Vice Chairman of the Board of Directors of CHMS, BSB in his capacity as guest of honour said, "Climate change is the immediate threat we currently face.
With extreme conditions in weather, we all understand the impact of our actions. By planting trees we send a message to everyone to do the same and to live the green way."
"Earth Day is a commitment to make life better, not just bigger and faster; to provide real solutions rather than rhetorical ones. I believe that we will re-examine the ethics of individual progress at mankind's expense," he added.
"Let's challenge ourselves to promise to change, without shortcomings. Benchmark it as a day where we are looking beyond tomorrow; above all, let's make life worth living."
CHMS, BSB also paid tribute to its school team who was awarded as the runner-up in the 18th Princess Rashidah Young Nature Scientist Award (PRYNSA) for its project, 'The ecological and socio-economic importance of water lilies in Brunei's freshwater ecosystem'.
