BERAKAS, BRUNEI-MUARA

The decision to choose a career path is always an important step for secondary school student. So the Careers Guidance Exhibition and Talks themed 'Hala Tuju' Programme (Directions Programme) at Berakas Secondary School (SMB) yesterday was considered a significant event in the school's academic year.

Organised by the Department of Schools, Ministry of Education, the event incorporated an exhlbition and talks participated by about seven organisations and institutions, which included Politeknik Brunei, Institute of Brunei Technical Education, Brunei Maritime Academy, Allied Health Professions, Institute of Engineering and Technology, Attorney General's Chambers, Royal Brunei Armed Forces, LiveWIRE, Brunei Darussalam Institute of Certified Public Accountants (BICPA), Kemuda Institute, Kolej International Graduate Studies and from the Dentistry sector.

Cikgu Abdullah bin Ismail, the Principal of SMB said the exhibition and talks event was not only a significant session for the students especially the Year 11 Science and Arts students but also for the parents as they can play a role in helping to shape the career of their children.

The exhibition could generate career opportunities and widen the students' knowledge on the various aspects and issues of chosen academic subjects and possible career paths, with assistance from the officers and staff of the organisations and institutions that participated.

The talks also helped in explaining relevant information that concerns specific careers as well as academic subjects, explained the principal.

He added that the event took place earlier than usual to give the students the opportunity to prepare in a more efficient manner for their subjects at the end-of-year examinations, giving them the motivation on the quantity of '0' Levels they needed for their chosen career paths.

He said there were two selected venues at the school for the talks and briefings for students to ask questions and have discussions with the relevant representatives on respective careers and academic subjects.

Year 10 students were also invited for the event to create a sense of awareness of their careers slightly earlier during their secondary school life.

Cikgu Hajah Noorisda Haji Ismail, Careers Teacher of SMB said the event, also participated by the Sports School, was designed for '0' Level students to give them the guidance on the direction they should be heading the moment after getting their '0' Level results.

The students met the careers experts and from the information they gathered, they will have a much clearer picture on their academic subjects and chosen careers, she added.

Dayangku Noorfazlina Wati binti Pengiran Haji Abdullah, a teacher involved in the career talks said the talks will generate the opportunity for the students in "getting the right subjects" in their `0' Level examinations for their chosen careers.

Citing a few examples, she said, for engineering-inspired students, they should have '0' Levels in Physics, Additional Mathematics and Mathematics, so the students know what subjects to aim for, and the same goes for other careers.

The organiser, the Department of Schools, were represented by Cikgu Siti Hajar binti Haji Khamis and Cikgu Hajah Roslin binti Pehin Datu Indera Sugara Dato Seri Laila Jaya Haji Johari, officers from the department's Counselling and Career Guidance Unit.

Cikgu Siti Hajar said this is an ongoing programme by the Department of Schools to generate relevant opportunities and provide information to the students and 20 venues have been chosen in the country for the 'Hala Tuju' Programme (Directions Programme).
