'Neighbour Banned Me From Going In My Own Garden - He Says I Set His Dog Off'

A man has been left gobsmacked after his neighbour banned him from entering his own garden because it makes his dog bark. He explained how his 'entitled' neighbour screams at him from over the fence whenever he steps foot in his garden - or attempts to mow the lawn.

After sneaking around his garden to appease his neighbour, he decided enough is enough and started to ignore him altogether. However, this proved to be more challenging than he thought.

Taking to Reddit, he said: "My neighbour and I have unattached properties with separate and fenced gardens. My neighbour has had a yappy dog for years that barks at everything and anything throughout the day. I regularly get barked and growled at by his dog arriving at or leaving my front door.

"I got a rescue dog and started using my garden to train, play and for toilet breaks with her for five or 10 mins at a time a few times during the day - always at reasonable times and always supervised. I try to be as considerate as I can be. My dog is walked everyday away from the house too.

"Within a couple of months my neighbour told me that his dog gets upset when I go in and out of my garden and that I’m rude and inconsiderate as he’s working from home." The man went on to explain how he also works from home but doesn't believe this entitles him to any special privileges when it comes to 'peace and quiet' in the neighbourhood.

"Unfortunately it’s spiralled from there and he takes objection to anything I do in my own home and sees everything I do like mowing the grass as 'winding up his dog', he added. "There has been a lot of verbal abuse shouted over the fence at me and my family members which we have been ignoring.

"I’ve explained to said neighbour that I’m using my garden to train and play with my dog and that it has nothing to do with trying to upset his dog." Desperate for advice, the man has taken to Reddit to ask users how he can protect his family other than installing a camera and reporting his neighbour to the police.

In response, one user said: "The issue has nothing to do with you or your dog. Your neighbour is just a narcissist who will take offence at anything you do. Not sure what the answer is except to ignore him. He won't do anything overt apart from constant complaining. As long as you listen to him, that's all the reinforcement he needs. Good luck mate."

Another user added: "Our neighbours always have a barking dog who also runs up and down the chain link fence nipping at our heals. He never walks his pets, so they have a lot of pent-up energy. We finally put up a fence in front of his fence. Problem solved."

A third user said: "Next time he complains, I'd be very tempted to tell him that if he'd bothered to train his own dog, the way you train yours, that he wouldn't be having these issues. He doesn't get to dictate what you do in your own home."
