President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo arrived in the United Arab Emirates early on Friday, after meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow on Thursday and Ukrainian President Volodymir Zelensky in Kyiv on Wednesday.

The Presidential Secretariat announced on Friday that Jokowi had arrived in Abu Dhabi at 2:15 a.m. local time. He was greeted by UAE Energy and Infrastructure Minister Suhail Mohammed Al Mazroei, UAE Ambassador to Indonesia Abdullah Aldhaheri, Defense Minister Prabowo Subianto and Indonesian Ambassador to UAE Husin Bagis, among others.

On Friday morning, Jokowi was set to meet with UAE business leaders and investors, followed by a bilateral meeting with UAE President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan. Both presidents were scheduled to perform Friday prayers together beforehand.

The President and his entourage were slated to return home later on Friday.

Mediating role

Following his meeting with Putin, Jokowi told reporters that it was important to move toward a peaceful resolution of conflict in Ukraine.

“Peace and humanitarian issues have been Indonesia’s foreign policy priority. It is within this context that I made the trips to Kyiv and Moscow,” Jokowi said in a joint statement with Putin.

Even though the war was ongoing, Jokowi said it was important to keep putting forward peace resolutions and opening spaces for dialogue.

“I have relayed President Zelensky’s message to President Putin, and I have conveyed my readiness to be a communication bridge between the two leaders,” Jokowi said.

Ahead of the visit, the President had said his mission was to seek an end to the Russo-Ukrainian war, which has caused food shortages and surging commodity prices around the world.

During his visit to Kyiv, Jokowi highlighted Ukraine’s importance to the global food supply chain.

“It is important for all stakeholders to provide safety for Ukrainian food exports, including from seaports. I support what the United Nations has done to support this,” he said.
