The decision to refer disciplinary cases involving Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin and Datuk Seri Mukhriz Mahathir to the Umno Supreme Council is not against the party constitution, says Datuk Seri Tengku Adnan Tengku Mansor (pic).

The Umno secretary-general said the decision was made after the party's disciplinary board wrote to him stating that these were high-profile cases and it then sent the cases to the supreme council for further action.

"As the disciplinary board itself did not want to make a decision as they were high-profile cases, what should we do then? Just keep quiet?

"So, as party secretary-general, I had to forward what was written to me by the disciplinary board (to the Supreme Council)," he said after launching the Semarak Komuniti 1Malaysia programme here on Saturday.

Tengku Adnan, who is also Federal Territories Minister, was asked to comment on Muhyiddin's statement that the decision to bring his case to the party's supreme council was against the its disciplinary procedure and constitution.

He said Umno, a party with structure, would always ensure that any action taken was in accordance with existing rules, and that Muhyiddin, as former deputy president, should understand and know that the action taken against him had not contravened those rules.

Tengku Adnan said the Umno constitution clearly stated that the supreme council had the right to carry out its responsibilities as the party's top decision-making body, and could also decide on other matters not stipulated in the party's code of ethics and constitution.

Asked whether the supreme council would make a decision on Muhyiddin and Mukhriz at its meeting, expected to be held on May 27, he said his task was only to bring the disciplinary board's request to the supreme council and it was up to the council to decide.

On former prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamed calling on voters not to vote for Barisan Nasional in the Sungai Besar and Kuala Kangsar by-elections on June 18, Tengku Adnan said this should not have happened.

"Why the need to do that? I can only ask him to think before he speaks and not to make statements that people could twist and manipulate, which ultimately could be detrimental to Umno, the party which had given him power to administer the country for more than 20 years," he said.
