Photos From Stone Stacking Contest Are Oddly Compelling

Okay, we’re not saying this is the most thrilling competition in the world.

It won’t beat the FA Cup final in terms of audience share.

But isn’t it cool and kind of mesmerising to see people stack stones so precariously?

Today was the second day of the Second European stone stacking and rock balancing competition, held in Scotland.

After reviewing the entries, we could stare at these pictures of stones for hours.

Maybe we will do.

Competitors travelled from across the world to show off their precision and balance with piles of rock, arriving in Dunbar from the USA, Austria, Sprain and France as well as the UK.

The first competition of the day was to balance the most number of stones.

The winner balanced 29 stones, slightly less than last year’s winning 32 stones.

We’re calling it: If curling can develop a cult following, this deserves to be next.

Stone stacking.

The European Stone Stacking Championships are Europe’s largest championships for all Stone Stacking and Rock Balancing artists and practitioners.

The overall winner received financial support for flights to the World Stone Balance Championship in Llano, Texas.

We can’t wait.
