Corporal Defies Disability And Is Now Working In The Police Armoury

TANGKAK

Despite losing both his legs to diabetes, Kpl Ismail Jiman can still stand tall with his new duties in the police force.

Since his operation in 2015, Kpl Ismail has been transferred to the Firearm Store department where he now cleans and repairs weapons for police personnel.

“Although the operation has robbed me of my life as a field officer, I am thankful for still being able to serve the force.

“Since the operation, I have not even been able to put on my uniform.

“It breaks my heart. I really miss it,” said the 54-year-old.

Kpl Ismail is among the personnel with chronic diseases at the Ledang police headquarters here who received aid, including basic supplies and financial assistance, from Johor Permaisuri Raja Zarith Sofiah Sultan Idris Shah here yesterday.

She was accompanied by her son Tunku Panglima Johor Tunku Abdul Rahman Ibni Sultan Ibrahim.

Also included in the aid package was RM60 worth of provisions, as well as a handy kit from the Malaysian Red Crescent Society.

Kpl Ismail said he had always wanted to be a policeman.

“I cannot recall what actually sparked my passion but ever since I was a young boy, I knew I wanted to be a cop.

“As soon as I turned 18, I signed up and joined the Johor police contingent right after completing my training,” he said.

Kpl Ismail had served in various departments for 36 years before his legs were amputated.

Another recipient, odd-job worker Rosli Md Shariff, said the aid would help his family of nine get back on their feet after the recent floods swamped their home in Kampung Sawah Ring.

The 52-year-old father of five, who is also taking care of his parents, especially his mother who suffered a stroke six months ago, said he was barely scraping by.

“It is a daily struggle. With the little I earn from doing odd-jobs, my family survives most days on fruits planted near our home.”
