Yang Berhormat Pehin Orang Kaya Indera Pahlawan Dato Seri Setia Awang Haji Suyoi bin Haji Osman, the Minister of Education was Present as the guest of honour at a reception held at The Empire Hotel & Country Club yesterday, marking India's 68th Republic Day. Hosted by the High Commission of India in Brunei Darussalam.
In her welcoming speech, the High Commissioner of India to Brunei Darussalam, Nagma Mohamed Mallick, mentioned several positive developments in the India-Brunei bilateral relationship.
Among them was the visit of the Indian Vice-President, ShriHamidAnsarito Brunei Darussalam in February 2016, where three Memoranda of Understanding (MoU) on Defence Cooperation, Cooperation in Health Sector and on Cooperation in Youth Affairs and Sports were signed.
As a follow-up to the Vice-President's visit, the Government of India extended e-Tourist Visas to Brunei Darussalam with effect from February 26, 2016. India and Brunei have exchanged letters granting exemption from visa requirements for up to 14 days to holders of Diplomatic and Official passports of the two countries in April 2016," she said.
Mallick then mentioned the expansionof economic and commercial relations between the two countries, including a visit by six Indian prestigious pharmaceutical companies to Brunei in July-August 2016; and the Buyer Seller Meet (BSM) 'India Investrade' co-hosted by the Indian High Commission and Energy and Industry Department of the Prime Minister's Office (EIDPMO) on September 15-17, 2016.
She also mentioned the close cooperation between the Indian High Commission and the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports in the successful `Monuments of India and Islamic Monuments of India' exhibition, which was held last December at the Malay Technology Museum.
"I am happy that the Indian community of skilled professional and workers is contributingto the economic development of Brunei, while maintaining strong links with their home country," said Mallick. "I thank His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu'izzaddin Waddaulah ibni Al-Marhum Sultan Haji Omar Ali Saifuddien Sa'adul Khaki Waddien, Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam, and His Majesty's Government for the care and attention that the community has always received."
The event then continued with a ceremonial cake-cutting, and the presentation of a souvenir from the Indian High Commissioner to the guest of honour.
The event also featured an IndianKathak performance of `Swarangtaal by the Pandit Jai Kishan Maharaj dance troupe.
India celebrates every January 26 as Republic Day, commemorating the establishment of the Indian constitution of January 26, 1950, that completed its transition into an independent republic.
Also present at the reception were high commissioners and ambassadors, senior government officials and members of the Indian community.
