As an Islamic Higher Education Institution in the country, Universiti Islam Sultan Sharif Ali, UNISSA needs to play a vital role in ensuring that the graduates produced are truly equipped with correct and strong religious knowledge as well as able to become a solid defence against all elements that deviates from Islamic teachings taught in the country.

Yang Berhormat Pehin Orang Kaya Indera Pahlawan Dato Seri Setia Awang Haji Suyoi bin Haji Osman, the Minister of Education said this at the Kesyukuran Ceremony in conjunction with the 10th anniversary of UNISSA'S establishment, yesterday.

Yang Berhormat Pehin said that UNISSA is not only hoped to produce graduates who possess strong religious knowledge and high intellectuality from the academic aspect, but should also possess praiseworthy character and behaviour, with integrity and piety. UNISSA must then ensure the teaching, learning, research and publication environment in UNISSA is not marred, provoked and influenced by school of thoughts that deviates from the teachings of Ahli Sunnah Wal Jamaah. Yang Berhormat Pehin added that UNISSA must ensure its students are always practising noble values, as contained in the country's Malay Islamic Monarchy, MIB philosophy, in their every action either academically or socially.

In his speech underscoring the achievements reached by UNISSA in its one decade of establishment, the Minister of Education also touched on UNISSA's efforts in strengthening its research profile in ensuring the institution can join the group of renowned Islamic Universities. Yang Berhormat Pehin acknowledged that UNISSA has carried out a number of research works and actively organises seminars in collaboration with several overseas higher education institutions. Such collaborative efforts will certainly improve UNISSA's quality and raise its name as well as acting as a platform for UNISSA to play its role in ummah development globally. At the same time, UNISSA need to also carry out research that will give a greater impact to the local community such as social issues including the behavioural issues, drug abuse and economy. The results can then be used as reference in assisting the government and certain agencies to solve the problems raised.

For the first time, UNISSA honoured 10 academic staff for their achievements during the 2015-2016 study session. Two of the recipients received the Excellent Teaching Award, 4 received the Excellent Research Award and 4 others received the Excellent Management Award. Also present was Pengiran Dato Paduka Haji Bahrom bin Pengiran Haji Bahar, Deputy Minister of Education.
