Many of us will have rules within our friend groups that state we never date someone that one of our friends has been romantically involved with in the past, but what would you do if you found out your own mum was in a relationship with a bloke you'd once had casual sex with?
That's the unfortunate position one woman claims to have found herself in, after her mum introduced her to her new boyfriend and she was left horrified when she realised who the man was. The 23-year-old woman said she had slept with the 49-year-old man "a few times" last year, and her mum has no idea.
In a post on Reddit, she said: "I have been encouraging my mum to date for a while. She's been a single mum for most of my life and it seemed her only priority was her children. My mum deserves love just like any other person, she's put us first for so long that it was time to put herself first for once.
"Well, she met a guy after some encouragement from me and I was happy for her. But recently she introduced me to her new boyfriend and I instantly recognised the guy because we slept together a few times last year. I kept my cool in front of everyone but internally I was freaking the f**k out."
The woman wants to be honest about the situation to her mum but has no idea how to approach it - especially after she was told by the man that she should keep it a secret.
"It’s going to be a very uncomfortable conversation but it needs to happen as soon as possible so your mum can make an informed decision about the future of the relationship."
While another added: "You need to tell her so she can make an informed decision about this guy. Then if she decides to continue the relationship or not is up to her. But in the case that you don't tell and then she gets serious with the guy and finds out that would be the real problem, by then she might even start thinking that you guys were cheating or something."
And a third posted: "She deserves better than a man who told you not to tell her and is okay with dishonesty."
