In the past one week, the number of COVID-19 cases reported in Brunei Darussalam has shown an increase whereby the number of cases detected is at an average rate of about 920 cases per day. The Minister of Health stated the matter at the media conference on COVID-19 New Normal held at Dewan Al-Afiah, Ministry of Health yesterday afternoon. Yang Berhormat Dato Seri Setia Doctor Awang Haji Mohd Isham bin Haji Jaafar also stated a total of 55,525 ART results were uploaded to the BruHealth app within one week of which 11.6 percent were positive for ARTs.
The latest results of gene sequencing tests for COVID-19 cases have confirmed the presence of Omicron subvariant BA.5 in the country, in addition to the Omicron subvariant BA.4 that was announced at a press conference last week. Thus, the increase in cases seen in recent weeks is most likely due to Omicron subvariants BA.4 and BA.5. This situation is similar to the situation seen in some other countries, where it is also expected that this increase will not burden the health care system in the country. Although there is an increase in the number of cases, the number of cases in Categories 4 and 5 remained at a low level.
Yesterday, 2 cases are in Category 5 and 4 cases are in Category 4. Similar to the previous week, over 99 percent of the cases detected within the past week have been categorised in Category 1 or 2 and do not require hospital treatment.
