The prices for chicken will not be floated and a new ceiling price will be announced soon, says Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob.

The current water and electricity tariff rate for domestic users in Peninsular Malaysia will also be maintained.

He said the government will cover subsidies worth RM5.8bil despite facing a sharp increase in fuel and other costs.

“This means that a rebate of 2 sen/kWh is maintained for all domestic consumers and no surcharge applies.

“There is no electricity tariff increase to domestic consumers in the Peninsula,” he said in a statement on Friday (June 24).

The imposition of a surcharge of 3.70 sen/kWh is maintained on commercial and industrial consumers.

“At the same time, the government also decided the price of chicken in the market will not be floated,” he said.

Ismail Sabri added that the new ceiling price for chicken would be announced by Agriculture and Food Industries Minister Datuk Seri Ronald Kiandee.

“This decision proves the government's concern in protecting the interests of the Malaysian Family, so as not to be burdened with rising prices and cost of living challenges,” he said.

The current ceiling price for standard chicken, which is set at RM8.90 per kg in Peninsular Malaysia, was slated to be removed on July 1.
