BUJUMBURA

Unidentified gunmen Thursday night shot dead a Burundian army officer in a bar at Kamenge in the north of the Burundian capital Bujumbura, police sources told Xinhua on Friday.

"Three criminals armed with a pistol and grenades stormed a bar around 22:30 (20:30 GMT) at Mirango in Kamenge neighborhood, shooting dead a Burundian army officer who worked at Kamenge Military Hospital as a physician," said Burundian Police Deputy-Spokesman Moise Nkurunziza.

According to Nkurunziza, the officer received three bullets in his head.

He added that the gunmen then blasted a grenade that did not make any casualties.

Nkurunziza also said that a second grenade was launched against people who were taking drinks with the victim, but did not explode.

He indicated that investigations have started to elucidate circumstances on the officer's assassination.

This is the third army officer killed in three weeks in the Burundian capital Bujumbura by unidentified persons amid reports of divisions within the Burundian army, which was denied by the army.
