The 1st of January 1984 was a historic day for Brunei Darussalam. Over three decades ago, Brunei Darussalam declared its independence, a truly meaningful gift for the country's citizens. By gaining independence on the said date, it is a huge achievement in preserving the country's sovereignty and security, added with continuous peace, stability, prosperity and well-being. The said date continues to be commemorated and become an oral tradition for citizens who either attended the historic moment at Taman Haji Sri Muda Omar Ali Saifuddien in the capital or watch it from television during that time.

At the time, His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu'izzaddin Waddaulah ibni Al-Marhum Sultan Haji Omar 'Ali Saifuddien Sa'adul Khairi Waddien, Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam in the titah proclaims and declares Brunei Darussalam's independence. The calls of 'Allah Hu Akhbar', led by Al-Marhum Sultan Haji Omar 'Ali Saifuddien Sa'adul Khairi Waddien followed by over 60 thousand citizens, resounded in the capital, making the moment even more meaningful.

The historic day remains in the memory of those attended the gathering, including people who were on duty at the time.

Although Brunei Darussalam declared its independence over 30 years ago, the effects will continue to be remembered and appreciated by the country's citizens and residents.

The country's achievement since independence has brought about many significant changes in the life of the country's citizens and residents.
