(KPL) The Lao Brewery Company (Beer Lao) presented on 8 October 491 million kip in support of organising annual Boat Racing Festival on Tha Vat Chanh, Chanthabuly District, Vientiane Capital.
The festival will fall on 14-20 October, while the racing day will correspond to 20 October, the succeeding day of Buddhist Lent or Rains Retreat 2013.
A handover ceremony for the support took place at the Vientiane Capital Administration Office between Lao Brewery Company Senior Deputy Managing Director Mr Sounthone Phommachak, and Vice Mayor of Vientiane Capital Mr Saythong Keodouangdy in the witness of Chief of Chanthaboury District Mr Phoykham Houangbounyouang and local authorities.
The annual festival is a major event falling under Chanthabouly District administration, according to Vice Mayor of Vientiane Capital, Mr Saythong Keodouangdy.
Aside from featuring a trade fair exhibiting a variety of products, both domestic and imported, as well as cultural performances, this year's boat racing festival will also showcase boxing events.
The trade fair will run from 14-20 October.
On the last day of Buddhist Lent, falling on 19 October, alms offerings will be made by Buddhist laymen in the morning, with a traditional candlelit procession at temples across the country.
Floating votives and'fire boats'will be released down rivers, particularly the Mekong River , for good luck.
This kind of religious practise also constitutes a way of worshiping the river.
A fire boat is known in Lao as Heua Fai .
"The boat racing festival is aimed at preserving and promoting the fine traditions of Laos as well as Vientiane Capital.
The tradition has been passed on from generation to generation since time immemorial," said the mayor.
