The government has approved a quota for civil servants and has determined that 5,000 people will be recruited to replace retiring officials next year.

Participants at the government’s monthly meeting for July, held on Jul 21-22, were told that the approved recruitments aim to respond to current demands at both the central and local levels.

Chaired by Prime Minister Thongloun Sisoulith, the meeting witnessed the consideration and approval of a draft law on crime, amended draft laws on layers and bar, animal husbandry and veterinary medicine, plant protection and quarantine, and a draft code of criminal law.

The government’s draft decrees on monk education and information management were also approved at the meeting along with a report on the consideration of the transfer of the Lao Red Cross, the National Commission for the Advancement of Women, and the National Commission for Mothers and Children.

Prime Minister Thongloun asked cabinet members to translate documents and focal work plans approved at the meeting for August 2016 into reality in an active and accountable manner.

He urged the Ministry of Public Security to focus on maintaining public peace and order, thus creating favourable conditions for the hosting of the 28th and 29th ASEAN Summits to be held in September.

He called on the Prime Minister’s Office, and the ministries of Planning and Investment, Finance, and Industry and Commerce to attach importance to preparing a government-business community meeting with the aims of ensuring that the private sector understands the government’s policies, and strengthening the competitiveness of local business people thus ensuring their active participation in the national socio-economic development.

PM Thongloun called on the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry to work with relevant sectors to continue promoting the monsoon production of local farmers and to attach greater importance to preventive measures against natural disasters such as floods and droughts.

He asked the Ministry of Finance to achieve revenue collection and budget expenditure targets as planned and urged the ministries of Finance, and Planning and Investment to work with relevant sectors at central and local levels to prepare the socio-economic development plan and State Budget plan for 2017 so that they can be submitted to the monthly cabinet meeting for September.

He asked the Ministry of Planning and Investment to prepare a report on the debts of state investment projects so that it can be used as a reference for determining new state investment projects for the next fiscal year and asked the Bank of the Lao PDR to prepare a report for the government on the financial situation of the country and a plan on the restructuring of state banks which are facing deficits.

The Premier also called on the Ministry of Health to form medical teams to cope with medical emergencies that may be experienced by delegates participating in the ASEAN Summits and other major events to be held over months to come.

The Prime Minister also asked the Ministry of Information, Culture and Tourism to promote and encourage public participation in fulfilling the Lao PDR’s chairmanship of ASEAN.
