KOTA KINABALU

Residents in Kota Kinabalu, especially in Sembulan, will face stern action if they are found guilty for illegal dumping to the extent of polluting the city.

Sabah and Sarawak Chief Judge Tan Sri Richard Malanjum said the stern action was part of legal provisions applicable on disposal of waste and would take effect from Monday.

He said such stringent action was meant to overcome cleanliness problem in the city, especially in the district.

“This is a stricter enforcement. If a person were found guilty, he or she will have to undergo community service, in addition to RM200 or RM300 fine,” he told reporters after attending Rubbish Clean-Up Programme in Kampung Sembulan here yesterday.

Also present were Chief Judge Tun Arifin Zakaria, Assistant Minister in the Chief Minister’s Department Datuk Edward Yong Oui Fah and Kota Kinabalu mayor Datuk Yeo Boon Hai.

About 500 people from 46 government agencies and private companies participated in the programme organised by the Kota Kinabalu Courts through the Environmental Working Group, in collaboration with Kota Kinabalu City Hall.
