BRUNEI DARUSSALAM

Generosity is part of the Bruneian character and culture. And giving gifts or alms is a tradition that adds joy to the festive days of Aidil Fitri.  Giving the cash gift called 'Duit Raya' or Hari Raya money not only adds pahala or the rewards of Allah the Almighty to the generous persons, but also brings satisfaction, enjoyment and happiness to the recipient.

Giving alms including Hari Raya money was the subject of today's Friday sermon.  In the sermon, prayer leaders said giving alms or gifts can help to develop good, generous and kind character.

It makes a person truly care for the needy.  Giving alms or other donations is also a way of lessening the burden of the poor and less privileged in that their plight is noticed and taken care of.

The sermon added that charity helps to foster closer relations among Muslims, and erase the jealousy of the underprivileged towards the wealthy, thus narrowing the gap between them.

Meanwhile giving Hari Raya money not only adds Allah's rewards but also brings satisfaction and happiness as one sees the cheerful faces of children who are giving the Green Packets.

The Hari Raya gifts can also help the needy.  On a different note, the prayer leaders or Imam reminded the congregants that giving Hari Raya packets is not obligatory.  It should not make the hosts feel ashamed or embarrassed if they do not give such Hari Raya gifts.

Apart from that, it is the role of the parents and guardians to teach the children and make them understand that visiting relatives and friends is not solely for getting the packs.  The prayer leaders stressed do not call the hosts misers if they do not give the Hari Raya money.
