Canada to Further Strengthen Ties with ASEAN

JAKARTA, INDONESIA

 

March 31, 2016 | Canada will further strengthen its relations with ASEAN focusing its resources to increase cooperation with ASEAN through regional mechanisms, said Ambassador Marie-Louise Hannan of Canada during the presentation of her credentials to the Secretary-General of ASEAN, H.E. Le Luong Minh, yesterday. Ambassador Hannan also reiterated Canada’s desire to join the East Asia Summit (EAS) and ASEAN Defence Ministers Meeting (ADMM) Plus.

 

Secretary-General Minh welcomed and congratulated Ambassador Hannan on her assumption of duty as Canada’s first dedicated Ambassador to ASEAN. He acknowledged Canada’s greater commitment to strengthen its Dialogue Partnership with ASEAN, including through the establishment of Canadian Mission to ASEAN as well as the increased diplomatic presence in ASEAN region as well as Canada’s supports for ASEAN on issues related to protection of migrant workers, human rights and disaster management.   He also commended Canada’s active role in the ASEAN Regional Forum (ARF) and noted its interest to participate in the East Asia Summit (EAS) and ADMM Plus.

 

Secretary-General Minh and Ambassador Hannan also discussed ways and means to substantiate the ASEAN-Canada Enhanced Partnership in years to come, particularly as ASEAN and Canada will celebrate the 40th Anniversary of its Dialogue Relations in 2017. Secretary-General Minh further encouraged Canada focus its cooperation with ASEAN in areas related to infrastructure development as well as food-security and food-safety.

 

Both sides also exchanged views on regional and international issues of common concerns.
