JALAN BESAR, SINGAPORE

DPMM FC faced an uphill task to advance in the Singapore Cup after falling to a 3-0 defeat to Ceres La Salle in the quarterfinal first leg at the Jalan Besar Stadium in Singapore last night.

Ceres La Salle midfielder Stephan Schrock now leads the goal-scoring charts in the Singapore Cup with 4 goals after another scintillating individual performance.

DPMM FC's midfielder Nurikhwan Othman earned a rare start in an expected first team.

The Brunei-based side were given a warning from the United Football League champions after goalkeeping custodian Wardun Yussof pulled out a fine stop from Bienvenido Maranon.

Ceres La Salle looked to be in the ascendancy as midfielder Paul Mulders struck a blistering shot which sailed wide.

The pressure finally told as the outstanding Maranon teed off Manuel Ott who finished with aplomb to give his side a well-deserved lead.

Carlos Martinez had a goal disallowed for Ceres La Salle after the referee spotted an infringement.

Stephan Schrock, who is full of confidence following his hat-trick exploits against Stallion last week, could not be faulted for attempting a 40-yard strike.

The former Bundelisga man was only testing his shooting boots as two minutes later he evaded past two DPMM FC defenders before lashing home a stunner from 20 yards out.

DPMM FC had a chance to get back into the game but Brian McLean headed over a Nurikhwan's cross.

Azwan Salleh produced a thunderous volley for DPMM FC but somehow Ceres La Salle goalkeeper Louie Casas managed to tip the effort wide.

Schrock then fired an ambitious effort from 30 yards which just cleared the bar and in a repeat of the first half the outcome was devastating after the on-sung midfielder converted Patrick Reichelt cross.

It was a historic night for Md Azim Izamuddin Suhaimi after making his competitive debut in the Singapore Cup who came on to replace Azwan Salleh.

The under-19 captain made headlines after being promoted to the senior team earlier this season and was recently eligible to play in the domestic season.

Ceres La Salle were reduced to 10 men five minutes from time after Manuel Ott were given a straight red following an off the ball incident.
