Bank Islam Brunei Darussalam (BIBD) yesterday performed its Zakat obligation, the fourth pillar of Islam, by handing over its Zakat on Business for the Financial Year 2015, along with the Zakat for Customer Deposits to the Brunei Islamic Religious Council (MUIB) at the Ministry of Religious Affairs (MoRA) building.

Present to receive the Zakat money was Pehin Udana Khatib Dato Paduka Seri Setia Ustaz Haji Awang Badaruddin bin Pengarah Dato Paduka Haji Awang Othman, the Minister of Religious Affairs in his capacity as the President of MUIB.

A total of $2,612,091.93 from the BIBD's Zakat on Business was handed over by Dato Seri Setia Haji Abdul Aziz bin Orang Kaya Maharaja Lela Haji Mohd Yusof, Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Religious Affairs in his capacity as the Chairman of the Syariah Advisory Body of BIBD.

Meanwhile, a total of $369, 573.93 Zakat for Customer Deposits for the period of 2015-2016 was handed over by Mubashar Khokar, Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of BIBD.

Also present at the event were Dato Paduka Awang Haji Abdul Mokti bin Haji Mohd Daud, Deputy Minister of Religious Affairs in his capacity as the Vice President of MUIB; Haji Hamzah bin Haji Sabtu, Acting Secretary of MUIB; Roslan bin Haji Taja'ah, Deputy Permanent Secretary (Administrative and Financial Affairs) at the MoRA,; Board of Directors and the Syariah Advisory Body of BIBD, senior officers of MUIB and BIBD.

The Zakat money received will be distributed to Zakat recipients who are entitled to it in the Sultanate comprising the poor, converts, `amil', 'al gharimin', and 'ibnu sabil'.
