The Fire and Rescue Department is always ready to deal with various forms of dangers, especially during the coming month of Syawal.
This was highlighted by the Director of Fire and Rescue, Yahya bin Haji Abdul Rahman at the presentation of Hari Raya Aidilfitri package ceremony 2016 at Women Operation Unit, Operation 'C' branch at Old Airport yesterday.
A total of l,000 personnel will be on duty at 25 fire stations in the country during the Hari Raya celebration.
"We appreciate and thank the personnel who are on duty in order to ensure public safety and security, particularly during the month of Syawal and whole year in general," said Yahya.
Representatives from all fire stations, units and branches throughout the country were also on hand to receive donation yesterday.
The donation was presented to commanding officers at operation branches nationwide.
Yahya said the mission of the department is to work with the community to protect what they value. "Our mission of the department is to handle emergency events."
In order to protect public from fires and other incidents, which usually increase during the Hari Raya celebration, he hopes the fire-fighters will continue to provide quality service in dealing with emergencies.
He said according to the emergency call statistics from January until May 2016, a total of 61 house and building fires were recorded by the department.
During the previous month of Syawal, seven cases were recorded due to misuse of electrical appliances and another three were caused by unattended cooking, children playing with fire and LPG gas leak.
He said the country is also affected by weather phenomenon such as El Nino that has caused large areas to dry up and be prone to bush and forest fires.
The statistics from January to May 2016 showed an increase in forest fire calls.
Out of a total of 916 cases, 339 cases were bush fires that were caused by open burning.
This is a challenge for all fire-fighters to stop the fires that have caused huge damage to the forest reserves in the country.
He said with the end of the dry season, the nation is currently experiencing Southwest Monsoon that causes flash floods, squally weather and strong winds that can uproot trees and tear off roofs.
He said for last year's statistics on road traffic accidents in the month of Syawal - the department received a total of 13 emergency calls regarding road accidents.
The cases involved five fatalities.
