A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was yesterday inked between Universiti Brunei Darussalam's School of Business and Economics (UBDSBE) and Archipelago Group.

The MoU aims to provide work experience to UBDSBE students under the Discovery Year Internship programme at Archipelago.

Signing on behalf of UBDSBE was Dr Haji Mohamad Nabil Almunawar, Dean of UBDSBE, while Archipelago Group was represented by its Executive Chairman Haji Md Razali bin Haji Johari.

Lim Thian Chan, Chief Executive Officer of Archipelago Group and Dr Muhammad Zahidul Islam, Deputy Dean of UBDSBE, witnessed the ceremony at the Integrated Sciences Building of UBD.

The MoU aims to broaden UBDSBE students' learning experience and equip them with hands on knowledge in the field of logistics as well as workplace communication skills as part of their Discovery Year experiential learning.

Discovery Year refers to the mandatory third year away from UBD, where students undertake one or two of the programmes - namely study abroad, internship, incubation or community outreach programmes. This experience will strengthen a students' ability to adapt to different working environments.

The MoU is the latest in a series of active collaboration between UBD and universities / institutions around the world spanning six continents.

In addition to internship opportunities, UBDSBE and Archipelago Group also discussed possibilities in other collaborative projects.

According to Dr Haji Mohamad Nabil Almunawar, "The university-industry collaboration provides a useful platform for our students to be exposed to real world situations and hence encourages them to develop real solution. It is very exciting and rewarding to see the student's ability to translate the theories they have mastered into products and processes that people use every day".

Haji Md Razali bin Haji Johari in his speech conveyed his gratitude to UBD for the collaboration as well as producing capable graduates in the field of logistics.

Highlighting the importance of Brunei as a logistics hub, he said, "Brunei Darussalam is strategically placed in Asean, and it will be a shame if the country cannot exploit the opportunities as a logistic hub of Mean and BIMP-EAGA in a bid to diversify the economy away from oil and gas."

At the same time he praised the government for undertaking projects like the Pulau Muara Besar with to promote downstream and upstream industries.

Archipelago, a local logistics- service provider established in 1982, understands the predicament of fresh graduates who are armed with qualifications yet lack the work experience, he said, adding that the company wants to help the youngsters in the country to get started as well as enhance the local workforce as a whole.

Three graduates of the Master of Logistics programme also signed agreements for the internship at Archipelago.

The graduates are Norain binti Damit, Nursyazwani binti Bujang and Siti Syazwani binti Haji Mohamad Kasim
