Morais Never Involved In Probe Into 1MDB And PM, Says MACC

PETALING JAYA, MALAYSIA

The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) has denied that murdered Deputy Public Prosecutor wrote a charge sheet relating to 1MDB or Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak.

Its chief commissioner Tan Sri Abu Kassim Mohamed pointed out that the late Datuk Anthony Kevin Morais was transferred out of the MACC in July 2014, a year before investigations into 1MDB even began.

Abu Kassim added that the MACC had never sought advice from Morais on both cases involving 1MDB and the Prime Minister.

“Therefore, Kevin could not be, and was not, involved in writing any charge sheet relating to 1MDB or the Prime Minister. Any statement to the contrary is completely false,” he said.

Abu Kassim pointed out that both Attorney-General Tan Sri Mohamed Apandi Ali and MACC Investigation Director Datuk Azam Baki had confirmed that Morias was not involved in both investigations in September and December last year, respectively.

“Kevin’s death was a tragedy. He should be allowed to rest in peace” he said.

In August last year, a draft charge sheet against the Prime Minister was published by Sarawak Report, allegedly leaked by the 1MDB investigation team.

The incident has caused several MACC officers to be brought in for questioning at the Putrajaya district police.

Morais went missing on Sept 4 last year after leaving his residence in Menara Duta.

His body was discovered cemented in an oil drum on Sept 16, 2015, which was dumped into a swampy area in Subang Jaya near here.

On Jan 27 this year, army pathologist Col Dr K. Kunaseegaran, 52, was charged in the High Court with abetting in the murder of Morais, 55, under section 109 of the Penal Code, read together with Section 302 of the same Code.

Six people – G. Gunasegaran, 47; R. Dinishwaran, 23, A.K. Thinesh Kumar, 22, M. Vishwanath, 25, S. Nimalan, 22 and debt collector S. Ravi Chandaran, 44 – were jointly charged with the murder of Morais between 7am and 8pm from Jalan Dutamas Raya to Jalan USJ 1/6D on Sept 4 last year.

All of them claimed trial.
