PERKEBAR to Organise Regatta 2016 in August

SERASA, BRUNEI-MUARA

The Brunei Darussalam National Boat Race Association (PERKEBAR) has been given trust and faith to organise the Regatta 2016 which has been slated in August tentatively.

The President of PERKEBAR, Awang Haji Haris bin Ibrahim (PIG) confirmed this recently during the side-lines of a managers' meeting for the 23rd National Traditional Boat Race Championship at the Serasa Water Sports Complex.

The association constantly sends national athletes to international competitions including two teams who made the trip to Palembang recently.

Asked on the involvement of youth in boat racing, those who are interested are welcome to join.

The association assured that a proper and appropriate selection process is in place particularly for athletes who have bright prospects of winning a medal.

"Every association not limiting to PERKEBAR send a national team must set regulations in accordance to the national sports policy especially selection of athletes. The selection depends on the success and failure of athletes," Haji Haris elaborated.

"The athletes are assessed whether the paddlers are competent to demonstrate their ability in exercises shown by the coaches."

"Even though they are strong but do not possess discipline, we will not consider them as a national athlete," he further added.

He said that the Department of Youth and Sports under the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports has no obligations for the recognised associations and will provide their full support especially when the association has forwarded a list of selected athletes.

Moving outside the country's waters, Haji Haris has revealed that the 29th SEA Games will be their biggest international meet in Malaysia in 2017.

The association has already made preparations by establishing a team and full training has already been carried out which is supported by the Coaching and Sports Development Unit.

Haji Haris concluded that local coaches must have experience and qualifications parallel to foreign coaches.

The national setup is currently guided by two local coaches following the departure of an Indonesian coach.
