Underprivileged Families in Remote Belait Received Contributions from MCYS

KUALA BELAIT

Four underprivileged families received contributions and gifts during a visit yesterday to the Belait District by officials and staff from the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports (MCYS).

The four families are from Kampong Kenapol, Kampong Bukit Puan in Labi, and Kampong Bakong of Lumut.

The charity visit was led by Pehin Datu Lailaraja Major General (Rtd) Dato Paduka Seri Haji Awang Halbi bin Haji Mohd Yussof, the Minister of Culture, Youth and Sports.

At the residence of the first recipient in Kampong Kenapol of Mukim Labi, the Sunday Bulletin spoke to Abidah binti Muntil, a 55-yearold senior citizen who lives with her sister.

She expressed gratitude to the Brunei Government for the contributions, saying that it was a great help to the family's daily spending for their essentials.

"Long live His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu'izzaddin Waddaulah ibni Al-Marhum Sultan Haji Omar 'Ali Saifuddien Sa'adul Khairi Waddien, Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam, for always caring about his subjects, especially those who are disabled, like me," said Abidah, who ceased to work as a cashier at a Kuala Belait petrol filling station in 2007 due to health conditions.

Both sisters started receiving government support in 2011.

"I was advised against working because of my heart condition, and I had two separate surgeries within the space of two years," said Abidah, who had a cardiac device implanted in 2014, and underwent another operation in 2015.

However, she claims that her spirits are constantly buoyed thanks to the presence of her family members who never fail to provide her with financial and moral support.

Yesterday's charity visit was an initiative under the ministry's 'Program Kembara Amal Ramadhan' to provide assistance for orphaned children, senior citizens and people with special needs for the coming Hari Raya festivities.

Among the entourage was Dato Paduka Dr Haji Affendy bin Pehin Orang Kaya Saiful Mulok Dato Seri Paduka Haji Abidin and Datin Paduka Dr Hajah Norlila binti Dato Paduka Haji Abdul Jalil, the Permanent Secretaries at the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports.
