Traffic Cop Sentenced to 12 Months' Jail for Corruption

 June 23rd, 2016  |  05:21 AM  |   1897 views

BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN

A traffic policeman was sentenced to jail for 12 months by the Magistrate's Court yesterday after he was found guilty of corruption.

L/Cpl 3541 Muhammad Hannafi bin Awang Abas corruptly obtained $40 from an individual as a reward for not taking action against the person for contravening the Road Traffic Act at Spg 74, Kampong Mata-Mata, Gadong on August 6, 2007.

Investigation by the Anti-Corruption Bureau was followed by the defendant's indictment in court, followed by the trial which commenced in June 2015 and concluded in March 2016.

"It would not be in the best interest of the country if the court is seen to be lenient against corrupt policemen," said Chief Magistrate Muhammed Faisal bin Pehin Dato Kefli when considering the sentence.

"Whether the gratification is a high amount or relatively low amount is not the issue, but rather the principle of having a corrupt-free law enforcement body," the Chief Magistrate added on highlighting the importance of integrity.

Deputy Public Prosecutor Sharon Yeo appeared for the Public Prosecutor. The defendant was represented by defence counsel Yusuf Halim.
