The 'stranger in the dark' who repeatedly raped his daughters over the course of 14 years was sentenced to serve a 14-year long imprisonment yesterday.

The Intermediate Court however spared the 52-year-old man from whipping due to his old age.

The defendant pleaded guilty to nine charges of rape and attempted rape on his daughters before Judge Pengiran Masni binti Pengiran Bahar.

Deputy Public Prosecutor, Rozaimah binti Abdul Rahman conducted the prosecution and informed the court that the defendant raped his daughters over the course of 14 years.

Between 2002 and this year, the 52-year-old pretended to be a stranger in the dark and possessed by evil spirits while carrying out the heinous acts.

For more than a decade, the girls kept mum, oblivious to the gravity of the crime. It was only recently that the matter was brought to light when one of the daughters related her latest ordeal to her boyfriend, who promptly reported it to the police. The court previously heard that Miss X was just 13 when she was first raped in 2002.

They were travelling in a car when the defendant pulled over along Bukit Barun, Tutong, to pass motion in the woods.

The defendant left Miss X in the dark and pretended to go into the woods. He came back and raped Miss X. He even slapped her.

Later the same year, the pair was travelling in a car with the suspect's late mother when he pulled over along Jalan Bekiau in Tutong. He said the car had broken down and they all had to walk home armed with only a torchlight. While walking home, the torchlight apparently stopped working. In the dark of the night, the victim allegedly disappeared.

Moments later he jumped out laughing, pretending to be someone else. When he pushed his mother to the ground, the girl screamed to her father for help. Little did she know, that it was her father who dragging her into the woods and raped her.

When the 'stranger' was done, Miss X ran back to her grandmother. When the father 'reappeared', the girl asked if he had heard her scream for help. The man said he was passing motion when he heard the scream, which he thought was from someone else.

Another incident in 2002, Miss X was again raped by the defendant. Later that year, 'the stranger in the dark' struck again, this time at the family's home in Tutong. It was night and there was a blackout, so most of the family had gone to the man's elder daughter's house.

However, Miss X was ordered to stay back with her younger brother to look for her mother's money, which had gone missing. The man then purportedly left the house. A short while after, 'someone' barged into the house, pushing the young boy to the side.

For a third time, the girl was raped by the stranger that was her father, who threatened to kill her if she told anyone-about the incident. As soon as the 'stranger' ran away, the father returned and casually asked his daughter if she had found the missing money.

Between 2002 and 2003, she was raped again, only this time it was not by a 'stranger' but by a man who claimed he was possessed by evil spirits. The father and daughter were travelling in a car when he pulled over along Bukit Barun in Tutong. He got his daughter out of the car and aggressively raped her.

As soon as he was done, the father apparently snapped back to reality and asked the girl what had happened. When Miss X told him that he had raped her, the man blamed the paranormal.

He even told his daughter that she had to give in to his sexual demands to ward off the evil spirits.

About 11 years would go by before the man had to sow his wild oats again - this time on his then 16-year-old daughter. One afternoon in 2014, he attempted to rape Miss Y at the family's home. Miss Y, however, managed to run away.

A year later, he raped another daughter on two occasions. Miss Z was 16 when he first raped her inside a car next to a garbage disposal area in Kampong Birau, Tutong. Later that year, Miss Z was raped again by her father at an empty hut at Kampong Birau.

In February this year, the first victim Miss X was again raped on two occasions. After a gap of about 13 years, the 'evil spirits' came back to haunt the now 27-year-old. She was travelling in a car with the rapist when he suddenly pulled over and raped her along Jalan Sebatang Sentol in Kampong Luagan Dudok, Tutong. The man reminded his daughter that he was trying to ward off the evil spirits.

The next incident took place on the morning of February 18 when the defendant pulled over with Miss X in the car along Jalan Maraburong, Tutong. Convinced of the tale she had been told, Miss X did not put up a struggle. She instead just removed her trousers before the man raped his daughter for the last time.
